people walking

A person in commuter can walk on walkways, crossings, stairs and ramps. When walking, a person, or "agent":

  • is defined by a position, a forward vector (compass heading) and an angle of climb
  • occupies a physical space, defined by a circular or elliptical column
  • has a (larger) personal space, defining the minimum preferred distance to other agents
  • is free to move in any direction on a surface
  • in normal motion, moves in the direction of the forward vector
  • advances along its current path
  • avoids other agents and fixed obstacles, with reference to its personal space

Each person, at each time-step, calculates a speed and direction for itself based on the path-advance vector and any avoidance vectors. In this way, it takes account of physical constraints and social forces.
